  • I’ve been back in New York City for 6 months now and loving
it!  But the one thing I miss most about New Jersey is the grocery
stores.  I lived right across the street from a gigantic Wegman’s, which stocked everything from gourmet chocolates to freshly made sushi to Pop Tarts.  Lots and lots of Pop Tarts.

    With
limited space and higher prices, it would be difficult to duplicate the
Wegman’s experience here in New York City.  But groceries are a
big deal here, and this article from New York Metro does an excellent
job of breaking down “the escalating battle between FreshDirect, Fairway and Whole Foods“.  Some interesting tidbits:

    • “I was misquoted!  What I really said is
that when Joe Fedele dies, I’ll be the first in line to piss on his
grave. And there will be a long line of people behind me.”
    • Ackerman says FreshDirect now does 25,000 orders per week… it retains about half the customers who try the service.
    • “[Whole
Foods] changed my life,” says the chef Bobby Flay, who lives near the
store. “I can get up in the morning and get whatever I want.”
    • When you’re paying $1.99 for a single Whole Foods doughnut, it helps to feel like you’re fighting the Man.
    • The
forthcoming Red Hook Fairway, scheduled to open in summer 2005, will
include 45 apartments or condos atop the 50,000-square-foot store, and
will have ferry service to the East and West sides; the entire facility
will draw its electricity from a Fairway-built power plant.

    After
buying some rancid meat from the Food Emporium in Union Square, its
time to start exploring other grocery options in the city.  In
addition to the places mentioned above, I’ve heard good things about
West Side Market, Garden of Eden, Chelsea Market, Green Markets, and
Citarella.  Any New Yorkers have other suggestions for reasonably
    priced, quality produce and meats?

  • No suggestions from me… I’ve never even been to New York. But you’ve made me recall with nostalgia the times I’ve lived in some big West Coast cities, and the selection of grocery outlets I had there. Now I live fifty miles from a big town/small city where there are few options. My nearest grocery source here is a campground, laundromat, video-rental, general store where it’s wise to check the freshness date, whether on milk or potato chips. I’ve found chips there that were more than a year past their date. I wish you success at finding fresh meat and produce.

  • would you believe chinatown of all places? no i’m not being bias. :P just go to a local asian market. they have all sorts of veggies, meat, and seafood all located in one big shop. you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.

dude. you told me you would wait on-line at costco/BJ wholesale club. what happened? can’t finish a 10 lb chicken? hehe..

btw, enough of thai food. email me more recipes.

  • petitekiu, Costco is an occasional thing, mainly because I mooch off a friend’s membership in Jersey. I do buy from Jackson Heights every now and then, but its quite a trek out there.

  • do you deliver pizza?

  • $1.99 for a doughnut? that’s pretty fucken expensive. they better have sprinkles on that mother.

i’ve always liked sainsbury’s in the new york region. check it.

  • Costco? I love costco. =)

  • Hey, I recently subscribed…thought I’d say hellooo…

No recommendations for stomach-safe meat in NY…I’m thinking about moving to New England to go to photography school…is it all it’s made out to be?

Maybe you should stick with Pop Tarts until you find a dependable butcher.  Better safe than sorry. :o )

  • This sounds like Paradise. There is no choice here in the islands. Three supermarkets. We all go from one to another on Fri night trying to get everything we want since no one place will have everything.

I would be so fat if I lived in NY and eating doughnuts made me feel responsible!

  • Ellis hooks, good stuff

I think that i enjoy Keb Mo more, but in general i listen to more jazz than blues so what do i know.

  • hi

  • Shouldn’t NY have a lot of great grocery stores too?

Come on, Bobby Flay of food network always goes to cool places, why can’t you?! Hehe… (that was sarcasm if you couldn’t tell…because I dislike bobby flay from what I see on food network)

Best of luck on your grocery search. =)

  • Hybrid_girl, I don’t know a single person who likes Bobby Flay, myself included. It sucks, cuz his is the only grilling show on Food Network right now.

  • do u have any html codes u wouldnt mind giving me? iheard from phlato user that u gave her an awesome skin. lemme know thanks a bucnh  ~CHels

  • Is that really you in the pic?

  • I LOOOOVE NYC. LOVE IT. I’m from Chicago, but my half sister lives there, in Brooklyn. I went to visit her for Spring Break, and I was totally in LOVE. Chnatown’s AWESOME, and that meat part of the city is becoming really popular…Designers are opening boutiques there and everything, it’s really interesting.

MAKE SURE you take a ferry to Staten Island sometime (it’s free!), just to see the AMAZING view. It’s great.

    PEACE OUT

ps. is that really you in the pic??

  • i would have to say chinatown..they’ve got everything that you want..plus..its cheap. . .

  • Hey Monsur! I just subscribed to your website. :)

The only suggestion that I have for your New York food search is definitely to go to any of the borough’s Chinatowns. They have cheap food and they’re pretty good too. Haha, good luck to you man. I’d help you out more but I’ve only been to New York City a couple of times. I live on the west coast in the United States, so I really wouldn’t know THAT much.

  • The Union Square Greenmarket (Mon, Weds, Fri, Sat) is certainly one of the best places for produce…if you get there ultra-early, you can get some sensational stuff that sells out fast, like wild blueberries and strawberries.  This is also the place to find “heirloom” tomatoes, which actually taste like tomatoes.  They also have some good vendors with fish, meat and poultry, cheese, and bread.

Citarella, Fairway, Jefferson Market (west village) and Dean & DeLuca (Soho) have all kinds of great packages and fresh gourmet foods, but all a tad pricey.  Gourmet Garage (at several locations in Manhattan) is well-sticked and there are some bargains to be had, plus they always have a lot of samples out for tasting.

  • Nevertheless surely your terminology must be wise
